The National Awards program is led by a committee of the ATA Board of Management. The Board appoints a Chief of Judges (the chair of the committee) for a term of two years. The role is offered to the Immediate Past Chairman of the ATA. The Chief of Judges appoints and retires a panel of judges.

The National Judging Committee reviews all nominations received and may request additional information or clarification by a nominator. The Judges select up to three finalists in each award category; more finalists if they desire it, subject to the entries meeting their standards. The Judges may elect not to select finalists in one or more categories.

No matrix of criteria can be a substitute for the judgement of individual judges who are appointed precisely for the particular level of expertise which they bring to the judging panel’s deliberations. However, the criteria will be used to distinguish those nominations which are prima facie eligible for finalist status from those which are not.

Where there is potential for a conflict of interest, a member of the judging panel will declare it and will not engage in discussions or otherwise influence the outcome of judging on the particular matter.
